An exploration of the UK carer world

 3 March

8.5 is crucial re pasting. We cannot proceed unless I can paste an entire page from any of my websites onto the new site.

You will have noticed that, on looking at several pages from this site in the tabs, or on saving a page, a standard title is offered.  You can't see which is which when there are several pages open or saved.  To get round that, I use a hidden page technique.

I would be unable to use a template or system that repeats this problem.

Not a high priority but Yola - good and bad here       login via Yola.com  with  afh@gastronomyafharrison.co.uk     and then  lament

If any problem logging in, give up early.

17 - The template

My final decision is one which, in broad principles, is like this one.

All statements are to be interpreted as starting with  "Ideally"or "Depending on practicality",

17.1

The Intro page would have this at the top:

THE UK-CARER'S WORLD - the only one-stop shop Updates Contact

box for a message about this long here which is to be used for emergency etc

All will be editable.

17.2

As you see on the present Intro page, the header graphic has a blue background. here.  The logo graphic would be stripped of its white background (unless you come up with new suggestions).  In that event, the darker blue background would need to allow distinction between the two blues or it would need to be a different colour. The title would tie in colour-wise in every case..

17.3

All pages in any section would have the same colour background so that square graphics can be inserted without leaving either white of black as default.  If white can be given as needed, even better. example  On that page the caption above, is "The root of something ... - see update 26 Feb" is in black - green may be better and with new words.  And style as  in 17.1

17.4

I'd like 12 max sections in the top nav panel.  Counties can become Areas, Resources can become Ways.  That raises the topic of colours.  You'll know how to cope with that.  I did it my way here.and here.  The titles of the sections must be editable.

17.5

Drop-downs versus lists as in G1.  At its worst, the list is far too long here. I'd be interested in your opinion.

17.6

Site plan/map

Once produced, one version would have a sentence describing each section and page.

17.6

Page content URLs

If I want to refer readers to the site as a jigsaw, I can say "See 11 here."  As I remember G2, it was difficult.  Most pages on this site are constructed with numbered lines and paragraphs like this one.  Putting a URL to each would be too laborious unless things have moved on since G2 was created  in 2011.

17.7

Pasting

Presumably, there will be a past as plain text option.

18 The Contract

The current version of this page will be dated and printed for both parties.

19 - Translation facility

How much?

Continuing the numbering system

14

Emails are at the foot of the page.

15

Can you show how the site visit stats work, please?

1

Thank you for your time yesterday.  When you have replied, I'll put new material at the top of the page.

2

As you may have seen, this site has gone badly wrong Updates 26 Feb here.  I'm looking at decision-making very soon.  I have two other quotes and there won't be any more after yours.

3

Using the gastronomy - G - site as a model has its limitations.  It's here.  One aspect of the new site is it's access by Android.  When I access the next site via Tablet or mobile it looks vastly different from this. It may be best to set the site up like this Yola site with blank space either side.

4

The G site is wide-screen which may be problematic.  http://www.thorneand.co/ may be in that category.

5

I have a domain - carersupport.info  which I can divert to the new site.  I'm looking to be independent.

6

Ideally, the site you create will be low maintenance re you maintaining it.  I hope to limit it to contacting you when there are problems.

7

We need to look at how the pages will be transferred.  By you or by me.

8  G2

8.1

The other G site - G2 - as you know, has its problems to be looked at later.  It's here.  My recollections of when it worked OK include what I see as a Word Press system mistake.  When the searches aren't successful on some Word Press sites you read

This is embarrassing, isn't it?   in large blue letters .  Perhaps the latest sites all give the result here.  G2 gives this which may be the best option.  I hope to explore possibilities with you.

8.2

http://www.cylex-uk.co.uk/s?q=asdasdasdasdasdasdasa&c=ross-on-wye&z=&p=1&dst=  seems OK but there's a typo funktion.

8.3

One big problem with the programming of G2 was the default inclusion of Comment facility.  It was always being picked up by search engines giving me frequent problems.

8.4

Another aspect of the Word Press G2 site when it was OK is pasting links.  I had to return them to active status.  That may have been bad programming.

8.5

Its ability to paste chunks or whole pages of a website on a page was zero.  Ditto making the fonts much larger at times.

I want the default font size to be the same as this.

10

Look at the use of Z when readers make contact here.  Is it worth bothering about?  Is the use of the dog, eccentricity gone too far?

11

From that page is      High-speed feedback invited here.   Any better ways?

12  Some other aspects arising from your sites

12.1

http://www.greenkey-garden.co.uk/ where the Contact details etc are elsewhere.

12.2

The drop-down page links might be in two colours.  Perhaps green for one page and blue which are home pages for a third level set of pages.  The home pages would show a new header graphic.Some subsequent pages might show a new header graphic.

12.3

I like http://coverconstruction.co.uk/about-us/ in that respect but the new pic would be at the top.  Readers know they are on my site website so don't need a reminder.  Less on the page.

http://www.hansfordplanthire.co.uk/ seems to repeat 2nd level page links.

12.4

http://cm-ltd.com/ no music or black background thanks.

12.5

http://philwilliamsbuilders.co.uk/services.html  gives a good page format with the graphic on the right or left.  The size of it would need to be editable.

http://philwilliamsbuilders.co.uk/gallery.html reminds me I need a key pages page - the links would go to pages where the graphic is repeated.

12.6

http://www.thegreenhillcompany.com/   would like the original man juggling graphic - it's in various bits.  A similar one would do.

12.7

http://www.morrisbricknell.com/   I like the graphics system.  Expensive?

12.8

http://www.cylex-uk.co.uk/reviews/viewcompanywebsite.aspx?firmaName=gmp-web-design&companyId=19665179 includes Sing and Grow and several others which won't link.

13  Social media

I hope to have a half-hour or so session with you as a paid exercise looking at the ins and outs.  I opted out of Facebook due to the vast number of unknown people who somehow manage to tag on.

That's all for now.  I hope to be in email contact with you soon.

14.1  27 Feb

Thank you for your time yesterday.

Some prelim aspects at the page given

Looking forward to hearing from you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
14.2  28 Feb
Thanks for popping in yesterday to show me the various websites you've been working on.  I have put together a summary and quote to convert the Carer's World site into a WordPress website
In Summary:
·         You require a complete rebuild of the website - http://carerworld.yolasite.com/
·         The website has 11 main pages and several sub pages
14.3.1
With the caveat that there are 60 or so pages now heading towards 200, please consider that we have a provisional contract  pending your presentation of some templates and including much of what I have already pointed out.
·         You will need to register a domain for the new website e.g. www.carersworld.com
14.3.5
carerworld.info and carersupport.info owned by me seem always to be prefaced by http:// and not www but I don't understand why there is a difference and nor do I know if they will rank lower in Google etc than if they begin with www.  That's part of suggesting that we discuss it for 30 mins and I'll pay you for that.
·         We recommend registering your domain and hosting with 1&1.  This usually costs around £3.99 a month.
·         We will perform basic SEO on the website
·         You will be provided with an online Content Management System (WordPress) - This means you can edit the pages yourself once the website has been launched
·         Your website will be configured to work across all platforms and mobile devices
·         You also require a new logo
Quote:
·         Based on the information above, I can confirm the website project would cost £ xxxxx plus VAT. This would include a year's worth of FREE WordPress maintenance (usually £xxxx plus VAT), which means I would make sure your website is always running on the latest software and all plugins are up to date.  This guarantees your website is secure at all times.
14.3.6
So far, I reckon that the maintenance after one year will be needed.
·         If you'd also like a new logo/branding for your website, this would cost an additional £xxxx plus VAT.
14.3.8
As far as the logo is concerned, it has low priority but a place for it in the template may be occupied with what I have at present,  If you could suggest a graphic or two which might be used, then good.  As I said, it's a difficult challenge.
·         Please note that we do not charge a monthly fee nor take ownership of your domain unlike many other website providers.
If you have got any questions about the quote I have provided, or you would like to alter the brief at all, please don't hesitate to get in touch.  If you'd like to go ahead with the project, we would require 50% up front and the remaining 50% at the end of the job.  If it is easier for you to pay the full amount at the beginning instead, then this is absolutely fine.
I'll look forward to hearing from you.
14.3  same date
14.3.1
With the caveat that there are 60 or so pages now heading towards 200, please consider that we have a provisional contract  pending your presentation of some templates and including much of what I have already pointed out.
14.3.2
The main Gastronomy site may be better than one with drop-downs.
14.3.3
The domain will be www.carerworld.com  not carers.  I presume I pay independently.
14.3.4
However, carerworld.com expires c 2020.  carer-world via 123reg is also taken.
14.3.5
carerworld.info and carersupport.info owned by me seem always to be prefaced by http:// and not www but I don't understand why there is a difference and nor do I know if they will rank lower in Google etc than if they begin with www.  That's part of suggesting that we discuss it for 30 mins and I'll pay you for that.
13  Social media - above - within the 30 mins?
I hope to have a half-hour or so session with you as a paid exercise looking at the ins and outs.  I opted out of Facebook due to the vast number of unknown people who somehow manage to tag on.
14.3.6
So far, I reckon that the maintenance after one year will be needed.
14.3.7
I am optimistic and thanks again. Please give me an idea of when you can start and how long it will take before the site can be live.  It needn't be 100% complete.  Just main pages to start with so that both sites run in tandem and I cross-ref from the new site to the old as appropriate.
14.3.8
As far as the logo is concerned, it has low priority but a place for it in the template may be occupied with what I have at present,  If you could suggest a graphic or two which might be used, then good.  As I said, it's a difficult challenge.
14.3.9
7 above
We need to look at how the pages will be transferred.  By you or by me. Nothing on the topic in your summary.
14.3.10
The G2 when working well was a nightmare re getting rid of pages.  They went into Trash.  If a topic within was searched, there were problems.
14.3.11
The present site uses a lot of hidden pages.  If Word Press can hide pages, I won't want them popping up during a search.  Is it best not to use the technique?
14.3.12
Ideally, you would show me the sitebuilder of a Word Press site and, specifically, how to insert graphics.  They were a problem when I ran G2.  I'll pay you separately.
14.3.13
Returning to the problem of all the header graphics on this site being replaced by one graphic, it took me a while to realise that I had clicked a default button in the sitebuilder by mistake. A more expensive site would have offered an "Are you sure" option.
What does Word Press offer?
16 - emails 1 March
I've had some time to go through your notes and I have written a few bullet points below:
·         Can you confirm that the quote I provided earlier in the week is for the Carer World website only   confirmed
·         If you'd like me to provide a separate quote for the Gastronomy site, please let me know too much to do at present so later
·         We can use one of your existing domains for the new website, although I would prefer if we could get this transferred to 1&1
         let's do that with carerworl.info - I will point it at the new site
·         I could start on the project immediately, but given the number of pages and content we'd have to add, completion could take a few weeks
        more things to be agreed yet
·         With regards to websites starting with www. or http:// - there is actually no difference so you don't need to worry about this
·         Your new website will be compatible with all devices and will look and work exactly the same across all platforms
·         I think the best way to tackle this project would be to make it a work in progress, adding in elements as we go along. agreed
·         To begin with I will just do a straight transfer of pages from old to new, and then we can eliminate or add content along the way.
         as seen above, we need to agree which template is to be used and what variations
         that done, we move to the contract stage - do you have a standard contract pro-forma?
Hope that all makes sense!  If you've got any other questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
