An exploration of the UK carer world

The hot-water-bottle song

We recruit Fagin and Bill SIkes who help create a song to sing when carers meet. note  There's a lot of " You've  got to" in it originally.  Within the new words, that scans better as "You gotta". Feedback will be sought when trials take place,

The boys are used for the chorus part on stage.  When groups of twenty or so are singing, the sheets could be marked with chorus etc.  However, they're not all singing which is the whole point.

You'll probably need to refresh the tune in your head.  Here it is on  youtube.

When you've hummed or even sung along with it, you'll be ready to see the new words and the verses which influenced them. More verses follow.

After the song has been outlined. there's a pastable version you can use for printing.  Verese 2 is somewhat doubtful but let's hear from you - (first reader and, much later, the general reader.)))

Leader tells folk what they're about to do, where the new song has come from

The song sheets are then given out

All together now

1

In this life, one thing counts

Carees everywhere,  large amounts
Keep them bright and full of bounce
You gotta pick-a-carer or two

Point to each other etc, each time.

You gotta pick-a-carer or two, folks
You gotta pick-a-carer or two

We love them all, love their bounce
You gotta  pick-a-carer or two.

2

Dear old caree passing by
Something nice takes his eye
You buy it and he breathes a thankful sigh
You gotta buy a prezzie or two

You gotta buy a prezzie or two, f o l k s
You gotta buy a prezzie or two

You buy it for a thankful sigh
You gotta buy a prezzie or two

3

If you're a man and you cook the lunch
Menus are more than just a hunch
Carees need to munch with punch
You gotta give a munch or two

You gotta give a munch or two, folks
You gotta give a munch or two

You gotta give a munch or two
You gotta give a lunch with punch - oi!

4

Winter draws on, weather's less bright
Keeping cold at bay is more of a fight
If you want to keep four feet all warm at night
You've got to fill a bottle or two

act as if filling a bottle each time, change hands , swap with each other, etc

You gotta fill a bottle or two,  f o l k s
You gotta fill a bottle or two.

Keeping four feet warm at night
You gotta fill a bottle or two

slower and with bazzaz

Keeping four feet warm at night
You gotta fill a bottle or two

These are the lyrics you may be familiar with:

In this life, one thing counts

In the bank, large amounts
I'm afraid these don't grow on trees,
You've got to pick-a-pocket or two

You've got to pick-a-pocket or two, boys,
You've got to pick-a-pocket or two.

[BOYS]
Large amounts don't grow on trees.
You've got to pick-a-pocket or two.

[FAGIN (spoken)]
Let's show Oliver how it's done, shall we, my dears?

[sung] Why should we break our backs
Stupidly paying tax?
Better get some untaxed income
Better to pick-a-pocket or two.

You've got to pick-a-pocket or two, boys
You've got to pick-a-pocket or two.

[BOYS]
Why should we all break our backs?
Better pick-a-pocket or two.

[FAGIN (spoken)]
Who says crime doesn't pay?

[sung] Robin Hood, what a crook!
Gave away, what he took.
Charity's fine, subscribe to mine.
Get out and pick-a-pocket or two

You've got to pick-a-pocket or two, boys
You've got to pick-a-pocket or two.

[BOYS]
Robin Hood was far too good
He had to pick-a-pocket or two.

[FAGIN]
Take a tip from Bill Sikes
He can whip what he likes.
I recall, he started small
He had to pick-a-pocket or two.

You've got to pick-a-pocket or two, boys
You've got to pick-a-pocket or two.

[BOYS]
We can be like old Bill Sikes
If we pick-a-pocket or two.

[FAGIN (spoken)]
Stop thief!

Dear old gent passing by
Something nice takes his eye
Everything's clear, attack the rear
Get in and pick-a-pocket or two.

You've got to pick-a-pocket or two, boys
You've got to pick-a-pocket or two.

[BOYS]
Have no fear, attack the rear
Get in and pick-a-pocket or two.

[FAGIN]
When I see someone rich,
Both my thumbs start to itch
Only to find some peace of mind
We have to pick-a-pocket or two.

You've got to pick-a-pocket or two, boys
You've got to pick-a-pocket or two.

[BOYS]
Just to find some peace of mind

[FAGIN AND BOYS]
We have to pick-a-pocket or two!
